Paws at Peace offers very selective but important services. Namely, in depth consultations regarding the concerns you have about your pets final days, palliative care plans, and in home euthanasia. We also provide cremation and memorabilia services (like having custom clay pawprints created of your pets paw).
Quality of Life Assessment
If you are not sure that it is time to say goodbye to your companion we can schedule a quality of life assessment (in person or over the phone). During this consultation we will meet you and your pet, listen to your concerns and take a good history about your pet. Once we have reviewed your pets medical records and evaluated your pet with a physical exam (if in person), we will discuss the options that are available for you and your pet. Together, we will tailor a unique end of life plan for your pet, that will provide the most closure for you and your family about your pets impending passing. Unfortunately, sometimes during a quality of life assessment our recommendation is to schedule a humane euthanasia. However, we will always explain exactly why we believe this is best for your pet, and there will be time to have all of your questions asked and answered.
Palliative Care
Palliative care is often a combination of medications based on your pets specific symptoms (pain, nausea, poor appetite, etc.). However, depending on the situation, this might involve hydration treatments, acupuncture, bathing, expressing your pets bladder etc. Every situation is unique.
Home Euthanasia
When the time comes, we will help you say goodbye to your pet in the comfort of your own home. Most owners find that this is a much more serene and less stressful situation for their pet during these final moments. It allows for multiple family members or friends to say goodbye in a calm way without the stress of worrying if you are taking too long. You should feel like you can take as much time as you need to be at peace with the decision. After your pet has passed, your doctor will take your pets body with them and arrange for your pet to be cremated.
Cremation and Memorabilia
Paws at Peace uses a crematorium company called Until We Meet Again. They are truly wonderful and put a lot of care into how they handle your pet after they have passed. We provide general cremation (your pet is cremated, but their ashes are scattered on a beautiful farm on private property - so you do not get them returned to you) and private cremation (your pet is cremation all by themselves and their ashes are returned to you in an urn of your choice). Through Until We Meet Again, we are also able to provide memorabilia for your pet, like hand painted clay pawprints and jewelry that contains your pets ashes. Most veterinarians in the Vancouver Lower Mainland use this company for their cremation needs, which means once your pet has been cremated, the ashes can be delivered back to your regular veterinarian to make it more convenient for you to pick them up. Alternatively, they can be picked up directly from the Until We Meet Again care center in Surrey, BC.
*Please note, we work closely with your primary veterinarian to be able to provide the best level of care for your pet. We will refer you to your primary veterinarian if we feel your pet requires further testing or treatments that we are unable to provide.
